Practical alternatives to a TEFL

  1. Use a relevant degree or licence. An education degree may satisfy a role's education requirement. A general degree can still help where the listing asks for a bachelor's degree. It does not automatically replace a certificate.
  2. Use language evidence when the listing asks for it. A platform may ask for C1 or C2 English, a native-speaker requirement, or another language credential. Match the evidence to the wording on the live page.
  3. Choose a marketplace whose current record fits your profile. Tutor-set-price platforms can let you present a niche without a named TEFL requirement, but profile review and student demand still determine whether lessons happen.

Choose the route that fits your evidence

  • No TEFL and no degree: start by checking marketplace records and roles that list language ability or experience rather than a certificate. Be exact about what you can document.
  • Degree but no TEFL: check roles that list a bachelor's degree, then compare any additional language, subject, or experience requirement.
  • Teaching experience but no certificate: foreground age group, subject, format, and responsibilities. A platform may accept experience where another asks for a certificate.
  • Planning to apply to schools: shortlist the roles that explicitly require a certificate, then compare course content, practice, accreditation language, and refund terms before enrolling.
