Listing policy

Teachers should be able to see what is known about a role, what is missing and where to check it. These rules apply to every listing.

What belongs on the board

A listing must describe an online teaching role or an ongoing teaching application programme, with a public source and an application route. Work must be possible entirely online. A school may also offer classroom teaching, but a role requiring attendance in person does not belong on this board.

We keep the employer’s location separate from restrictions on where applicants may live. Subject, learners, schedule and qualifications are shown where the source provides them. Missing information is not permission to apply without meeting a requirement.

We do not list opportunities that charge applicants deposits, recruitment fees or placement fees to obtain work, or that mainly sell training instead of offering teaching work.

Published pay and missing pay

A public rate is not required for a base listing. If the employer has not published one and teachers have not reported one we could check, the listing says “Pay given when you apply”. We do not replace missing pay with a plausible wage.

Published figures keep their original currency and paid unit. A rate per lesson or minute is not relabelled as an hourly wage. Any approximate US dollar guide is secondary, keeps the same paid unit and reads “about USD …”. Fees, unpaid work and other material terms are shown when the source provides them.

A platform where tutors set their own prices is different from an employer advertising a wage. Programme comparisons label that distinction. Calculator scenarios are assumptions, not employer promises.

Hiring status and dates

The last checked date records a source review. Applications can close after a review. Figures are checked on the date shown; automatic updates are not running. We distinguish accepting applications, unconfirmed hiring and not hiring at the last check. An ongoing application page is not presented as a newly posted vacancy.

When a role closes or its application route changes, its status should reflect that evidence. A historical listing must not be presented as currently accepting applications.

Sponsorship does not change the evidence

Employers can buy featured placement for one vacancy: USD 59 for 30 days, invoiced by the Plain Chalk team, with at most five featured at a time. A featured listing carries the visible label “Sponsored”. Payment buys placement, never a different hiring status, source date, pay or eligibility, and every listing passes the same review. The terms are on the For employers page.

Corrections and enquiries

If a detail is wrong, email us at support@plainchalk.com with the listing, the correction and a public source. Employers can request corrections through the same route.

To propose a listing, read the employer page. For more about our checks, read the methodology.
