How to use this guide
A teaching specialty does not create a published wage. The records below separate asking prices, advertised pay, per-session terms and unpublished pay so you can compare like with like.
- Keep a per-minute or per-session figure in its original unit. Do not turn it into an hourly wage unless the source states one.
- Use a specialty to describe a real skill or learner need.
Exam preparation: IELTS, TOEFL and TOEIC (major English tests)
Exam lessons benefit from a clear diagnostic, a target skill and practice using the exam format. The current records give two useful marketplace starting points:
- Preply: English tutors show a USD 15 to USD 25 hourly asking band on the teach page, checked 16 Sep 2026. It is an asking band, not take-home pay. Regular lesson commission is 33% down to 18%, with 100% commission on new-student trials.
- italki: tutors set lesson prices, but no typical hourly range is published in the current record, checked 18 Sep 2026. Its official fee schedule is 0% for trials, 21% for single lessons, 19% for 5 lesson packages, 17% for 10 lesson packages, 15% for 15 and 20 lesson packages and 30% for group classes.
- Outschool: teachers set a class price and the official Teacher Fee is 30%, so this is not a 0% commission wage. The current record does not publish a typical tutor wage.
Business English
The records support these comparisons:
- Preply publishes the general English asking band above. The record does not publish a separate corporate contract wage.
- italki publishes no typical hourly range. Use its lesson-type fee schedule when planning a price.
- Verbling does not publish a wage. Its current record says applicants need a certificate or verifiable teaching experience and C2-level command of the language (proficient level), checked 16 Sep 2026.
- Ringle carries an advertised USD 17 to 22 hourly band, checked 16 Sep 2026. Requirements were not re-read in that check, so confirm them on the live tutor page.
Kids English
Magic Ears has an advertised USD 19 to USD 26 hourly band on its own posting, checked 18 Sep 2026. Novakid describes its pay as competitive but does not publish an hourly wage, checked 13 Sep 2026. Outschool publishes a fee rule rather than a tutor wage.
Conversation and pronunciation work
Cambly publishes USD 0.17 per minute for adult live chat, not an hourly wage, and new-tutor intake is limited, checked 17 Sep 2026. Set-rate marketplaces such as Preply and italki still require you to check their current pay basis and fee terms.
A practical specialty plan
- Choose one learner and one task you can teach accurately.
- Write a short profile line that names the task and your real evidence, such as training or relevant work.
- Compare the platform’s current eligibility, pay unit, fee rule and intake status.
- Keep notes on enquiries, lessons and costs. Revisit your price only after you have your own records.
Stay current
The board and linked company pay pages show the source basis for each listing. Check those records before applying. The newsletter page is only a format preview because no email list is live.
