Start with the role, then the programme

Primary numeracy, secondary algebra and exam preparation ask for different skills. Read the vacancy itself before you prepare an application. An employer that teaches several subjects may be recruiting for only one of them.

• Topics and curriculum: check the age group, syllabus and language of instruction.
• Applicant requirements: check qualifications, teaching experience, residence and any licence required for that role. A requirement that is not published remains unknown.
• Schedule: confirm the teaching time zone, minimum commitment and whether sessions repeat each week.
• Remote work: confirm that teaching, training and any required meetings can all be completed online.

Compare pay for the same work

Keep the original currency and paid unit together. A lesson rate is not automatically an hourly rate, and a tutor’s advertised price is not a wage.

Read preparation, administration and training rates separately from teaching pay. Ask about cancellations, minimum paid hours and any fees before estimating what you could earn. When pay is not published, ask the employer rather than filling the gap with an estimate.

Prepare a short teaching example

Choose one idea at the level in the vacancy. Explain it, work through an example and give the learner a question that reveals their reasoning. Plan what you will do if they make a common mistake.

What qualifications do maths roles ask for?

Requirements vary by role. Some employers ask for a degree, teaching licence, subject assessment or experience. Read the published requirements and ask about anything unclear.

Can I apply from another country?

Online work can still have residence or work authorisation restrictions. Check the applicant location requirements separately from the employer’s office address.

Does maths teaching pay more than English teaching?

There is no single rate for either subject. Compare specific offers with the same currency, paid unit, fees and workload. Do not treat marketplace asking prices or maximum rates as typical earnings.
