What each pay basis means

The board labels every pay figure with the basis it rests on, so you know where the number comes from. Details are in methodology and evidence.

Advertised (11) — the operator publishes this rate, its unit and who it applies to. This is the only basis that counts as a published wage in aggregates.

Advertised in source units, not hourly (3) — the operator publishes this rate, but in a unit other than hourly (for example per minute or per lesson). Shown in its own unit rather than converted, so it is not mixed into hourly aggregates.

Asking (1) — prices tutors set themselves on a marketplace, as published by the platform. These are asking prices, not what tutors actually earn.

Community-reported (1) — rates reported by teachers or third parties, not by the operator. Take them as one data point.

Estimated, not a published rate (25) — a Plain Chalk planning figure where the operator publishes no rate. It is never presented as advertised pay.

Pay given when you apply (16) — no hourly rate we could compare — some publish a figure in another unit, shown in the table.

Only advertised and asking figures are rates the operator itself puts forward. Estimates and community-reported numbers are kept on the board for reference but are labelled so you can tell them apart.
