What visa do you need?

Visa
The state programme uses a national visa applied for at the Spanish consulate, and the programme sponsors it. Private school posts ask for the right to work in Spain. The state programme requires a university degree, or at least second-year university study.
Visa
Apply for the national visa at the Spanish consulate at least two months before your posting start date.
Passport
Hold the nationality or permanent residence of one of the participating countries.
Degree
Have a university degree, or be at least a second-year university student when the call closes.
Age
Be 18 or older on 1 January 2026; new applicants must be under 45 on 1 January 2027.
Health check
Declare (Annex I) that no illness or condition stops you from working as a conversation assistant.
Criminal record check
Provide a negative certificate of sexual-offence convictions; renewals must ask the Spanish police for one.
TEFL
Teachers must have the right to work in Spain, and a CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL or equivalent.
